I saw this recipe for watermelon jello shots on pinterest and I knew I wanted to try it out for our cookout this past weekend! It was really easy and everyone loved it! Since I’m pregnant I couldn’t have any of the ones with vodka but I made some non-alcoholic for myself, too!
What to do:
Cut a mini-watermelon in half length wise. Spoon out the watermelon so just the rind is left (I used an ice cream scooper) It should look like two watermelon bowls. I also cut a little bit off the bottom so they would stand up and not roll over in the fridge.
Boil water. Mix 3 packets of jello (3 ounce size) with 2 cups boiling water and stir until dissolved. Add 1 1/2 cups of vodka (or other liquor you like)
I used fruit punch flavor jello because my store didn’t have watermelon flavor. You can really use any red flavor you wanted or get the green “melon” flavor. I wanted to get the red look of watermelon so that’s why I picked the fruit punch one.
Pour into the two watermelon halves and refrigerate to set, about 4 hours or overnight.
The original recipe says to refrigerate for 1 1/2 hours and then add chocolate jimmies to look like “seeds.” I didn’t really think this was necessary and I wasn’t convinced that chocolate would go well in the jello so I omitted this step.
Slice up and enjoy!
You can see the original recipe on this blog.
I loved this idea because it comes out so cute and you could really do it with any kind of fruit! You could do orange jello in orange halves, lemon in lemon slices etc! Much more fun and easier to eat than jello shots in those little plastic shot glasses!
