I wanted to try to make a new Jello-o shots recipe for a cookout so I made watermelon jello shots! It was really easy and everyone loved it! Since I was pregnant when I first made this recipe I couldn’t have any of the ones with vodka but I made some non-alcoholic for myself, too! Since this recipe is for half of a watermelon you could easily make one half with alcohol and one without for the non drinkers!
How to make watermelon jello shots
Cut a mini-watermelon in half. Set one half aside to use for whatever you want, or you can prepare both halves for shots. Spoon out the watermelon on one half so just the rind is left, I used an ice cream scooper. Be sure to get all of the pink watermelon flesh out. It will look like a watermelon bowl. I set the watermelon bowl into a mixing bowl so it would stand upright when it’s filled. You could also slice off a little from the bottom so it stays steady, but honestly it’s easier to just set it in a bowl!
Make the jello shot mixture with watermelon jello, knox, boiling water and cold vodka. The knox is definitely needed in order to keep the shots firm when you slice them up. Fill the watermelon bowl with the shot mixture then transfer to the fridge to set for about four hours. If it doesn’t fill up all the way, that’s okay! When you slice it up you can slice off any extra rind before serving.
Where to find watermelon jello
Watermelon jello that’s pink can be hard to find! I used jolly rancher brand for the watermelon jello. I got it at Wal-Mart and you can also find it on Amazon. They also sell Jell-o brand watermelon flavor on Amazon. I’ve linked both in the recipe card below, so you can check them out! Both of these are also available in smaller quantities online from Wal-mart, but you have to pay for shipping. I just found the Jell-o brand one so I’m going to have to try it soon with some other shots!
Watermelon Jello Shots Recipe
Watermelon Jello Shots
Cute and refreshing watermelon shots are perfect for your summer festivities!
Ingredients
- 1 small watermelon, cut in half
For each half
- 1 box watermelon flavored jello/gelatin (I used jolly rancher brand)
- 1 packet of knox gelatin
- 1 cup boiling water
- 1 cup vodka
Instructions
- Cut watermelon in half and scoop out insides. Now you have a watermelon bowl!*
- Be sure to scoop all the pink away so you're just left with rind!
- Put watermelon "bowl" into a larger bowl so it'll stand upright when you fill it.
To make one half of the watermelon:
- In a mixing bowl mix watermelon gelatin and Knox together.
- Add 1 cup boiling water and stir well.
- Add 1 cup vodka and stir.
- Pour mixture into watermelon half.
- Transfer to fridge to set, about 4 hours.
- Slice up and serve!
Notes
*If you only want to use half, you can cut up the other half however you want! This is what I did in this recipe.

I loved this idea because it comes out so cute and you could really do it with any flavor of jello if you don’t like watermelon! What’s your favorite jello shot?
