Carter loved going on the race car ride at the outlet mall! This basically has nothing to do with the rest of this post but it sure is cute! |
Last Saturday Carter and I went to the outlet mall and on the way home we stopped at Chick’fil’a for lunch. I debated going inside or through the drive through, but glancing through the windows I saw the huge line inside so I decided it would be more comfortable to just stay in the car. And then this happened…
I pulled up to the window with my $20 bill ready to pay and the guy in the window just stared at me and smiled. Then he burst out “your food was paid for by the car in front of you!!!!!” He practically yelled it, he was so excited! I was so surprised because I have heard about people doing that before but it’s never happened to me or anyone I know personally! I just kind of stared back and then I asked him “well what should I do?” I mean, in the stories when this happens people pay for the car behind them and then behind them and so on and it’s a big chain. Right?
“Should I pa for the car behind me?” I asked the drive through guy, he shrugged and then replied “well their total is $60 so….” $60!!! First of all woah that’s a big bill for a drive through lunch! Second of all, my bill was only $17 and I only had a $20 bill with me to pay!
So I ended up sheepishly telling the kid “sorry” and becoming the good deed line breaker (although to be fair, I was only the first person in the line of good deeds). As I was about to drive away with my free food he handed me a card saying “oh yeah, they told me to give you this.” It was a business card that said “pay it forward.” Of course then I ended up driving home feeling like a giant ass because I didn’t pay for the car behind me! It all happened so fast and it was such a big difference from $17 to $60!
So now I basically owe the universe $17.
I figured out what I’m going to do but I’m not going to say it here because that kind of defeats the purpose of the whole “pay it forward” thing.
What would you have done? What would you do with $17 to pay forward?
