Before I was was SAHM (oh so long ago!) I was a high school teacher. For the past four years, I was also the student council adviser, which made me in charge of planning prom as well! I loved planning prom, because I love picking out themes and decorations for parties!
As prom adviser one of the questions I would get a lot from students and parents was about the dress code for prom. They were always concerned with what would be appropriate to wear, and how formal the dress needed to be.
To me prom is always supposed to be a formal event, so my first piece of advice would be to pick a more formal dress! Don’t just go to the mall and pick out any old dress, do some research to find the right one! This doesn’t mean you have to spend a lot of money, either! There are plenty of websites such as JenJenHouse that offer amazing dresses with great prices.
I just love a classic prom dress like this one!
The second piece of advice I would give to parents and students shopping for prom dresses is to keep in mind all the dancing you will probably be doing at the prom! With that in mind, you want to make sure to find a dress that appropriately fits your body up top, and isn’t going to slip or fall off!
If you’re uncomfortable with a strapless dress for that reason, a cute one shoulder dress could be the perfect solution!
My third bit of advice is to keep an open mind when shopping for a prom dress and have fun with it! Does your prom have a theme? Maybe you considering looking for a dress that fits the theme! Keep an open mind and try on a few different styles- you may find an amazing dress in a style you never imagined you would like!
For example, I may have been nervous to try this dress on when I saw it on the rack, but how amazing are the colors and sparkles?! Prom is a great time to go all out with the sparkle, even if it’s not something would you normally wear!
If you love sparkle for a prom dress you should definitely check out some of these great options at JenJenHouse (http://www.jenjenhouse.com/Prom-Dresses-c18/recommend/)
Of course one of the most important things to keep in mind is to have fun! Choose a dress you love, that fits your style and your schools guidelines! Keep it formal, make sure you can dance in it and don’t be afraid to try new styles!
