This indoor sandbox was really fun, easy to make and safe for babies who like to put things in their mouth! It is made of edible materials- whole wheat flour and vegetable oil! I have to warn you though, it will make your play area smell a little like you’ve been making fried food!
All you need is 4 cups of whole wheat flour and 1/2 cup vegetable oil. The whole wheat flour gives it the “sand” color and a more sand like consistency than regular flour. If you don’t like vegetable oil, other oils would work or you could even use baby oil if you aren’t worried about your kid trying to eat it! I got the recipe from the blog Fun-A-Day. The “sand” has a great texture that is soft and can be crumbly or you can form shapes with it. It’s mold-able just like sand, and we even made little sand castles!
I would recommend putting your kid in clothes you really don’t mind getting messy and NO socks for this because it is really messy and I was even finding it on my jeans and my own socks after awhile!
We started off with just playing nicely in the bin, but soon it turned into a “sand” free-for-all. Carter loves to try to sit in his sensory bins, and it was quite messy! I bought the beach toys at Target, $3 for the set!
Carter loved this bin and played with it several more times after the first day! He knew exactly where I was storing it and kept going to that spot and trying to reach for the bin! After awhile I decided to throw it out because I wasn’t sure how long it would last, and I didn’t want to attract bugs! I am looking forward to making the “sand” again soon, and maybe adding some shells and ocean animals to the mix!
Here is how long this activity took:
Indoor Sandbox: Carter played with this for about 30 minutes each time we played.
Stay tuned! More toddler activity reviews to come! Do you have a fun toddler activity you think I should try? I’m looking for ideas so please let me know!
