On Sunday of our Rhode Island trip we drove into Connecticut to visit Mystic Seaport! Mystic Seaport is basically this little recreated historic village along the Mystic river. If it sounds familiar it’s probably because you’ve seen or heard of the movie Mystic Pizza, which takes place in the nearby town of Mystic! The seaport village has recreations of buildings and shops from the 19th century maritime village along with plenty of pretty boats to ooh and aah over!
Here we go!
Our first stop was the preservation shipyard. There is a small museum area which talks about how the ships are preserved, and a huge open warehouse area where the work is done!
Boats all over! They also had boats rides from the dock you could take for a very reasonable price. I think it was around $5/person or less. They also had a free ferry that took you from one side of the seaport around the point to the other side! We didn’t do any of the boat rides though since we had just gone on a boat tour in Newport the day before.
The cute lighthouse at the seaport! Inside was a small sitting area with videos about lighthouses.
In the village there are rows of shops and houses to show what life was like during the 19th century. One of the shops we visited was the cooper, which I think was Carter’s favorite since they let him sit in the big barrel!
More barrels!
Although the row of shops was cute, I also really liked the museum they had about the history of oystering!
Mystic Seaport is really a great place to bring kids! They have a lot to see and do and stuff specifically for kids as well. There was a kids center with all kinds of sea related toys to play with such as sea animal puzzles and boats models. There was also an outdoor play area with three boats kids could climb in and on. They also have shows and demonstrations, but we didn’t try to catch any of those on our visit.
There really was a lot to see and do there, we didn’t see a lot of it and we were there for about three or so hours!
Have you ever been to Mystic Seaport? What was your favorite part?
