A couple of weeks ago my in laws were in town I took them to one of my favorite lunch spots- Wegmans! In case you don’t know, Wegmans is a grocery store, but they have a fantastic prepared foods area including salad and hot bar, sushi and a big seating area with a kids area, too!
Anyways, as we were checking out we (the adults) all got cups at the register for the soda fountain. Carter, of course, has his own sippy cup in the diaper bag filled with water and juice. The cashier decided that Carter needed his own soda fountain cup and instead of asking me, the parent, or my in-laws, the grandparents, she just hands him the cup and says “here you go buddy, you can have some soda, too!”
What-the-what?! Ummm no he the heck cannot have some soda, too! He’s two years old!
I gritted my teeth, paid and walked away. We set up our table, took the questionable cup from Carter and hid it out of site! We gave him his normal sippy cup and moved along with eating lunch.
Except Carter of course did not forget about the cup and kept asking for it while he ate. Not loudly, just once and awhile he would point in the general direction of the cup and look at one of us and ask “cup?”
After a few minutes the lady at the table behind us got up and came back with a cup. She handed it to Carter and said “I think your son wants a cup.”
I glared at her, my eyes blazing (in my imagination at least) and snapped “thanks, he has one, as you can see,” pointing to his sippy cup sitting right in front of him.
Hey lady- mind your own damn business! I mean seriously, who does that?
I just cannot believe that an absolute stranger would have the nerve to hand someone else’s child something right in front of them, let alone the cashier who offered him soda from the fountain! I was shocked that this woman, who had no idea of our situation, thought it would be helpful (?) to interfere. Carter did have a cup, full of juice, sitting right there. Yes he wanted a soda cup, and no I wasn’t going to give him one, and that is my business as his mom, not yours!
Has anything similar ever happened to you? Have you ever been in a situation where you just wanted to yell “mind your own business!”?
