Today is the two year anniversary of Hurricane Sandy. Many people have seen first hand the devastation a hurricane can cause, yet so many people face hurricane’s unprepared for the possible outcomes. If you live in a hurricane prone area, during hurricane season it is very important to be prepared. Usually you will know several days ahead of time that a hurricane is on the way, so use those days to put together your hurricane kit. Here is a checklist of things I think are important include in your kit:

Some of these items may seem obvious now, but in an emergency situation it’s nice to have an organized list to keep track of!
Although it was two years ago, it can take a lot longer than that for a region to recover physically and economically. Many families were displaced and lost their homes due to the hurricane and this especially takes a toll on the children who lost everything in the hurricane, including their sense of stability. The Save the Children organization works with children like this to help them rebound from such catastrophic events.
Losing your entire sense of stability at such a young age can be
devastating. Save the Children’s Journey of Hope program allows
children to express their feelings and learn critical coping skills that
allow them to bounce back and more
forward. Without adequate support, children often fall permanently
behind in school while they grapple with intense sadness, depression and
anger. Two years after Hurricane Sandy, Save the Children continues
our work with children in the hardest-hit communities
in New York and New Jersey.
Do you feel prepared to protect your children during a disaster? Save the Children’s recent poll shows that 49% of U.S. parents don’t
feel the very prepared to protect their children from disaster and 51% think their children’s school’s aren’t prepared either! Check out Save the Children’s videos and their amazing infographic about emergent preparedness.
What can you do? Check out Save the Children for more information! Sign their pledge to protect children from disaster and encourage
your friends and family to do the same. They’ll share this with your state
government if it doesn’t meet the disaster report card preparedness
standards for schools and child
care.
