Welcome to the second week of my Color Week series! We are learning one color per week by incorporating different activities focusing on one color at a time. For the first week we focused on the color red, and this week we did all our activities with the color yellow!
We kicked off yellow week with some dot coloring pages that I made! Carter is really loving using the dot markers, I wish I had bought them sooner! I created printables with yellow items including: a lemon, a cab, bananas, a star and a sun! We also colored the word “yellow” and then Carter proudly helped hang up all his artwork on the window.

Next on our Yellow Week agenda was playing with yellow slime! I used this recipe from the blog Growing a Jeweled Rose and it’s awesome! Check her out, she has a ton of great sensory play recipes! I added yellow food coloring for yellow week! I actually did not use as much of the borax mixture as the recipe called for, I added it in slowly to the glue mixture until I had the consistency I wanted, instead of just dumping it all in at one time, which is what I did the first time I tried to make it! Live and learn!
Slime and so fun to play with, but very messy! It’s easy to contain, until your kid starts throwing it around the room. A note about slime- I found it easy to wash off skin and hair, but not so much off clothing! I had to wash my sons socks and pants twice in the hot cycle to get the slim off! So, maybe next time this will be a bathtub activity for easier clean up! The slime can be stored in a plastic baggy or air tight container so you can keep using it for awhile!
We also made a tissue paper sun for Yellow Week! We poured glue all over a paper plate, I even got a little brave and let Carter help do the glue! Then, he tore up yellow tissues paper and stuck it on all over. I cut strips of yellow construction paper to make the sun’s rays and he helped me glue those on the back
One the fourth day of Yellow Week we did a fun water color tot tray! I set up a container of water, a medicine dropper and a color tray. On the color tray I put drops of yellow food coloring in each section from 1 drop up to 6. Then, I showed Carter how to use to medicine dropper to fill up each section for different hues of yellow!
We also pulled out a second type of medicine dropper, and he loved experimenting with both! Of course there were some spills, so just be sure to set up a towel under your tray!
This activity was absolutely fun and Carter spent a ton of time on it! After all the sections were full he dumped it back into the main container and started over by dropping yellow water slowly into each section, and this went on for awhile! This was a great opportunity to focus in on one color and really talk about it.
For our last Yellow Week activity we made Jell-o jigglers! You mix 4 boxes of Jell-o with 2 1/2 cups of boiling water until it’s dissolved (no cold water). Pour it into a large dish, cake pan etc and place in the fridge to set. After it’s set you can cut out shapes with cookie cutters or just slice the Jell-o into cubes. This was the part I let Carter help with, and we had a blast pushing different shapes of cookie cutters into the yellow Jell-o and then tasting the jigglers to guess what the flavor was! Carter said it smelled like “apples” but he couldn’t place the flavor, which was lemon! We did this on the weekend which was also a fun way to bring daddy into our color week fun!
Next week we are covering the color blue! Stay tuned for all our color week activities over the next few months!
What are some color activities you’ve done with your kids? What were some of their favorites?
