Orange week challenged me to come up with some different activities, I don’t want to do the same activities each week and just change the colors! To me the first things that comes to mind when I think of the color orange is all the different orange colored foods. An easy activity would be to have an “orange lunch” with orange crackers, cheese, oranges, peaches and other orange foods! I wish I had fit this into our week, but I will try to do a color themed lunch soon!
Another orange food is, of course, carrots! I brainstormed this carrot garden sensory bin and I love the way it came out! It was easy to find the orange Easter eggs since Easter is only a month away! Make sure to find eggs that have little holes so you can stick the pipe cleaner “stems” through. I found these at Target.
Carter had fun pulling out the “carrots” and planting them back into the bin!
For another Orange Week activity I create this lion felt page. The lion face is glued onto the page and the orange felt strips make up the lion’s mane! Carter had fun putting the mane on and moving the pieces all around! This will also be a great addition to our felt no sew quiet book!
We also played with orange play dough! I created the same dough I made back in December except I used orange extract and orange food coloring instead of mint and green. I gave Carter a few different cookie cutters to play with in the dough, but he had his own idea and ran out of the room to grab a few trucks to drive through!
We had a great couple of inches of snow that week so I was able to scoop up a bin full to create this snow volcano! Simply pile the snow up to form a mountain and then scoop out a little dip in the middle. Place a small cup, bowl or in my case tupperware in the middle and fill with baking soda.
Then I filled a squirt bottle with orange food coloring and vinegar and showed him how to squirt the vinegar in to create the volcano! This was something he absolutely loved and asked to do over and over again! I see more baking soda/vinegar activities in our future! If you don’t have snow at the time you are doing this activity you can try it with sand or dirt or even just do it out in the yard.
Of course our color week wouldn’t be complete without a little painting! For this one we created an orange tiger mask out of a paper plate! I just cut out two holes for the eyes, mixed up some orange paint and let Carter paint away! While he painted I cut out the nose, mouth and stripes from black construction paper and the ears from some orange paper.
While the paint was still wet, I glued on the mouth, nose and ears and I let Carter glue on the stripes! He was so proud of his mask and pointed it out to us all week.
Last but not least we rounded out our Orange Week with some orange dot coloring pages. He still enjoys using the dot marker but sometimes tries to dot other things such as his toys and the dog!
Other things you could do for orange week may include:
- wear orange clothes
- do an orange themed bath
- read books about orange things (or with orange covers)
- cook and eat orange foods
- create things with orange only blocks
- go on an orange scavenger hunt
Next week we are covering the color purple!
What are some color activities you’ve done with your kids? What were some of their favorites?
