I am getting excited about the new MARVEL’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron movie coming out in May so we decided to catch up on the original movies with some friends by hosting a fun Avengers movie night! Not everyone had seen the first movie and it’s always great for those of us who have seen it to re-watch it before the new one comes out!
I decided to have my friends over for snacks, dinner and dessert for our movie watch party. I had so much stuff I had to set up two party tables, one for snacks and one for desserts!
At our snack table featured Hulk Smash punch, a popcorn bar and plenty of Avengers themed snacks! We had Avengers Doritos, Cheese-Its, Dr Pepper and Kellogg’s fruit snacks! Check for the specially marked packages when shopping in your local Walmart.
For the popcorn bar I wanted to give a variety since not everyone likes the same kinds of popcorn mixes! We had a sweet mix with a Captain American theme and a spicy mix with a Hulk theme!
Captain America Popcorn:
- Popped plain popcorn- I use 1/3 cup popcorn kernels and pop them in a brown paper lunch bag for about 1 minute, 45 seconds.
- Mini marshmallows with sprinkles- dunk the mini marshmallows quickly in water then toss in a plastic baggy filled with sugar sprinkles in your color of choice. Shake the bag to cover the marshmallows and repeat the process until you get as many as you want!
- Red, white and blue candy!
Hulk Popcorn:
- Popped plain or butter popcorn
- Melt desired amount of butter (I used 2 tablespoons) in a saucepan and add a few drops of food coloring. Stir in the food coloring as the butter melts. Drizzle over your popcorn and toss to coat.
- For added spice mix in some wasabi peas!
I also provided regular butter popcorn in case anyone wanted plain popcorn as well!
The Hulk Smash punch has a combination of fruit flavors that work surprisingly well together! Be sure to chill each of the juices beforehand so your punch is nice and cold! The surprise part of the punch is in the ice! It’s made of gelatin, which gives it a bright color and let’s the cubes last longer so your punch doesn’t become all watered down!
Hulk Smash Punch Recipe:
You will need:
- 1 can pineapple juice
- 1 bottle sparkling white grape juice
- about 3 cups limeade
- Optional: 3-4 drops green food coloring
- For the ice cubes: 1 box (3oz) lime geletin, 1 cup water and 1 cup limeade
Prepare the ice by boiling the cup of water and then mixing with the gelatin until it is fully dissolved. Mix in 1 cup of limeade and then pour the gelatin mixture into an ice cube tray. Freeze overnight.
Mix all the punch ingredients together in a big bowl. Add the ice and serve!
As I set up the snack bar, a little marshmallow thief snuck in!
In the dining room I set up another party table full of desserts! I decorated the table with a string of cupcake liner lights in a superhero theme. Just poke a hole through the middle of each cupcake liner, push a light through it and then repeat!
The Thor’s Hammer Pops were my favorite recipe I made for this party! I really wanted to make sure they came out rectangle shaped so they actually looked like hammers! My secret? To achieve this I bought a frozen cheesecake and cut it into hammer shaped pieces! Let the cheesecake thaw just a little before you cut it. The tricky part was putting the sticks in because if the cake is too cold the sticks will cause it to crack, too warm and it will fall apart when you dip it in the chocolate.
A solution to this problem (which I thought of after the fact!) is to put the sticks in and then place the pops back in the freezer for a little while so they are nice and firm when you dip them!
For this recipe you will need: 1 frozen cheesecake, 1 bag of white chocolate candy melts, black food coloring and cake pop sticks.
For the outer layer- melt a bag of white chocolate candy melts in the microwave at 30 second intervals, stirring between until it’s fully melted. Add a few drops of black food coloring and mix until it’s fully incorporated and you have the color you desire.
Carefully dip each pop into the melted chocolate, then tap gently to get off any extra. You might have to use your finger or a butter knife to help spread the chocolate over for full coverage. Set each pop to dry on a sheet of parchment paper. When they are dry (it doesn’t take long!) transfer them all to a plate to store in the fridge until party time.
My last recipe is my Captain America Shield Treats!
For these treat you will need:
- puffed rice cereal (6 cups)
- mini marshmallows (4 cups)
- butter (3 tablespoons)
- food coloring
- flat marshmallows
- a small star shaped cookie cutter
For this you will follow the basic cereal treats recipe, except do half at a time for the different colors. So melt 1 1/2 tablespoons of butter on low heat, add 2 cups mini marshmallows and stir until melted. Add the food coloring for your first color and mix well, remove from heat. Add 3 cups of cereal and mix until it’s coated. Spread out on a large pan. Repeat these steps for your second color and spread the second mix out on top of the first in a layer. For the shields I did the red on the bottom, then the blue.
While it’s still warm, carefully roll the treats into a log shape. You might have to press and shape it a little with your hands to get the correct shape. Let it cool a little and then slice the log into circles to make the shields! For the final step, use the small star cookie cutter to cut star shapes into the flat marshmallows. Top each shield with a star and you’re done!
After setting out all my food, I quickly set up for our mini-photo booth! I put out a basket with masks and props for my guest to play with as they walked in! While we waited for everyone my son kept picking up the props and exclaiming “woah, that is awesome!” and trying to sneak away with them!
The Hulk Smash punch was a hit, not to mention the Doritos!
For dinner we had Super Hero Pasta! I made my regular pasta bake recipe, but topped it with super hero shields made out of pepperoni and stars cut out of mozzarella cheese!
Dinner was a hit and everyone had fun pretending they couldn’t lift the Thor’s Hammer cake pops! Are you worthy?
After dinner we played a quick game of Avenger’s trivia! Kay and Kim won and as a prize received Avengers Lego toys! I don’t want to spoil the answers, so I won’t upload a photo of the trivia game, but if you want a copy of the Avengers Trivia game you can grab it here. The first page is a blank answer page and you print one for each team. The second page has the questions and answers for the quiz master at your party to read!
Getting ready to watch the movie! The kids were more interested in the toys!
In the end we had a blast and everyone loved all the party food! As you can see, the Hulk hands and mask were also a big hit with the group!
You can find everything you need for your Avengers movie watch party at Walmart! Look for the specially marked packages of Doritos, Kellogg’s fruit snacks, Cheeze-Its and Dr Pepper! They had special displays out for the movies and toys, and I found all the themed party gear in the party aisle near the greeting cards.
Be sure to check out the Super Heroes Assemble app available in the iTunes and Google Play stores! Use the app to scan displays in store to unlock special features!
Thanks for checking out my Avenger’s Movie Party! Are you planning to see MARVEL Avengers: Age of Ultron in theaters? I’d love to hear from you- how to do you prepare to see a big movie?
