While it’s true you can’t find all the same ingredients in Switzerland as you can in the U.S., I am still figuring out just how extensive that list may be! Meanwhile, I am able to find substitutes for some things or just do without and make something different! But, some things need no substitute and one of those is pre-made pastry dough! I used a large sheet of puff pastry dough to make a yummy breakfast pastry that was so easy to make you could even do it on the weekdays!
These breakfast pastries are similar in size and taste to a toaster strudel or pop tart but are made fresh! You can also control the ingredients as much as you’d like, so you know exactly what is in that filling!
Homemade Breakfast Pastries
You will need:
- 1 package pre-made puff pastry dough (thawed if bought frozen)
- 1 egg
- strawberry jam/jelly (or flavor combination of choice)
- cinnamon and sugar mixture for sprinkling (optional for topping)
- 1 tablespoon butter (optional for topping)
Spread the dough out on a large cutting board and cut into equal pieces. Preheat the oven to the package directions. Prepare baking sheet with cooking spray of choice. Lay half the cut pastries out on your baking sheet.
Beat the egg and add a little water if you’d like. Brush the egg wash on the edges of each pastry rectangle. I didn’t have a pastry brush with me, so I used a fork and it worked just fine!
Then, spread your filling out over each one. I used strawberry jelly and spread it out with the back of a spoon to make an even layer.
Getting closer!
Top each one with another slice of pastry and crimp the edges together with a fork. Carter really wanted to help with this part so they are a bit uneven, but it really didn’t matter because they cooked just fine! Cook according to package directions.
Serve warm, but be sure to let them cool a little after you take them out of the oven as the filling will be very hot! I kept telling Carter how hot they were, but he wanted to test it for himself! I topped them with a tiny bit of melted butter and a sprinkle of cinnamon and sugar- yum!
Enjoy! This was an easy breakfast to make and perfect for a cool fall day. I am going to experiment with fillings and I think I will try brown sugar and cinnamon filling next!
