This week we took a little break from our food and drink recipes to cook up a craft recipe instead! We made salt dough Christmas trees, which are so easy for kids to make themselves and customize for all sorts of holiday shapes and sizes! This recipe makes plenty of trees, depending on what size cookie cutters you use, so make up a batch and invite some of your kid’s friends over for an ornament making party!
Start of with a basic salt dough recipe: flour, salt and water. Mix together and then turn dough out onto a floured cutting board. Roll the dough to about 1/4 inch thick, then use Christmas tree cookie cutters to make the trees. Make sure your kid knows these are not cookies to eat! (although if they try it they will figure it out pretty quick!)
Use a straw or similar item to punch a hole at the top of each tree. Make sure it’s not too close to the edge so the dough doesn’t break apart. Bake the ornaments for two hours at 250F.
After the ornaments have cooled you can start decorating! We used craft paint, but you can also spread with glue and add glitter or other decorations! When the paint is dry your ornaments are ready to hang!
Merry Christmas! What are your favorite homemade ornaments to make?
