We make so many delicious dessert recipe for mini chef Mondays, I thought it might be nice to throw something in there for the dog once and awhile! Currently our dog is on special diet for his stomach problems and can only eat prescription diet food and absolutely nothing else. Unfortunately for him, this also includes yummy dog treats! So, we created some special cookies just for him, using only his special diet dog food and he loves them. Just because a dog has a special diet doesn’t mean they have to be left out! They are so simple to make and my mini chef had a ton of fun making something special for his pal.
Scoop out one can of wet food in your dog’s prescription brand. You can ask for this at your vet if you don’t normally buy wet food. I won’t say what we use because this isn’t about any certain brand, and each dog is different. Just a little recipe note here, this recipe is very smelly so be sure to have a fan on or a window open to let some fresh air in!
Crunch up about 1/2 cup of special diet dry dog food. We used a hammer! Mix half of the crunched up pieces with the wet food. Form the mixture into balls and then flatten each one to make cookies. Place on a parchment lined cookie pan, do not prepare pan with any sort of spray or butter as that is an extra ingredient your doesn’t need (and may not tolerate based on their diet!). Be sure to wash your hands really well after, because they will stink!
Use the rest of the crunched up dry food as “sprinkles” for the dog treats. My mini chef really loved this step and loaded up each cookie with as many toppings as possible! Bake for 350F 15-20 minutes. For softer cookies bake less time, crunchier cookies more time. Allow them to fully cool before giving to your dog! Store in a baggy or airtight container for up to a week in the fridge.
“Bone” appetit!
Be sure to ask your vet before giving any foods to your dog that you are unsure about. I am not a vet and therefore cannot give recommendations on what you should or should not feed your dog.
