While a lot of people we know across the country have started back at school, we start in September so we are still in summer mode here! This week we made some fun color changing lemonade, which is made with all natural ingredients! Read on to find out what secret, magical ingredient we used to make our lemonade change colors!
The secret ingredient is….
Red cabbage! That’s right, we used red cabbage to create the color changing effect in our lemonade! The cabbage reacts with the acidity in the lemons to change it from yellow to pink! To create this effect we first cut up 1/4 a head of a large cabbage.
Add the cabbage to a large pot and add two cups of water. Bring to a boil and stir a little, which dyes the water a nice purple color. Once the water is dyed, strain out the cabbage and pour the purple water into ice cube trays. Freeze overnight.
The next day…
Add the purple ice cubes to your glasses. (Don’t forget the big toothy grin!) Slowly pour lemonade over the ice cubes to see it change colors! We used store bought lemonade. You can also make your own, if you have a favorite recipe, just as long as it’s yellow! Kids and adults will both love this fun drink! In case you’re wondering- no the cabbage does not make the lemonade taste weird or “cabbagey” at all!
Enjoy!
