When I was pregnant as soon as I found out we were having a girl I started dreaming up how I wanted her room to look! This turned out to be quite a long thought process because I am not a huge fan of anything too “girly,” and that immediately eliminated about 75% of all the “girl” nursery sets for sale! It was really hard to find a theme I wanted and my first idea for a theme was actually something totally different than what we ended up going with. Then I saw some ocean animal prints on etsy that I loved and everything came together! I quickly realized I could make a perfect ocean themed room without going too heavy on the “girly!”
Welcome to Riley’s ocean themed room! One thing I knew from my first kid was that I didn’t need to go super overboard making the whole room “themed out!” I wanted everything to basically match, but the ocean stuff didn’t need to be the main focus. In other words, I didn’t get ocean critter everything down to the last detail!
Here is the overview of her room! Sorry the picture is a little blurry, I took it way back when I was pregnant and before I got my new phone with a better camera! The crib and dresser are both from Target! This was right after Toys’r’us went out of business and they just really didn’t have any baby furniture left when we went shopping. One thing missing from this photo is the rug we bought for the room after she was born. It’s probably the most girly thing in the room, as it’s pink with white dots! It’s also from Target and you can see it on her monthly update posts since I put her on the carpet for those photos.
Crib Details
The prints over the crib are what started it all! I bought them from a shop on Etsy called Marta Dalloul Art. She has all sorts of ocean animal prints to choose from and I went with these four because of the colors and because I knew I wanted to do four vertical prints in a row. (which turned out to be quite a hassle to hang!) You can find them here if you’re interested! Our baby monitor is called Cacoon Cam and is also a breathing and movement monitor! It connects to an app on our phones so we can check on her from anywhere! This is pretty cool since my husband travels a lot, he can see her even when he’s out of the country!
For the crib sheets I wanted something simple and for some reason I really wanted polka dots! So I finally found some light grey and white polka dot sheets at Pottery Barn Kids that worked!
Ocean Animals Mobile
I debated if we really needed a crib mobile or not because with Carter we barely used it! In the end I decided to go for it and ended up having to cobble one together myself, as the exact one I wanted didn’t exist! I found the cute handmade crochet animals on etsy and let me tell you, they are such good quality! They came from this shop which is based in Turkey so they took a little extra time to ship but it was worth the wait! I highly recommend them! I then ordered a basic crib mobile arm with music box off amazon and used some string to tie the animals on! When she is too big for the mobile I’ll be able to re-purpose the animals as a decorative garland or maybe I’ll just let her play with them!
Rocking Chair Corner
Since we got rid of all our baby furniture from our first we didn’t have a rocking chair either! This chair came to us from our friend and neighbor! She gave this to us before we knew the gender but we lucked out because the blue just kind of flows right in with the rest of the room!
The pillow I had to get because Carter has a pillow with his name on it from when he was a baby, too. His is blue and white and matches his crib bedding as well. I saw this madras print at Pottery Barn Kids and I knew it was the perfect match with the fish mobile and prints! I grabbed the crib skirt to match as well as the toddler quilt. I know she won’t be able to use the quilt for awhile, but it was on final sale so I wasn’t sure they’d still have the print later! Finally, on the wall I hung the ocean themed ABC’s which came from this etsy shop! We also now have a mirror my mother in law made hanging over the chair on the other wall. It’s painted with ocean animals and her name.
Changing Table
Last but not least is the dresser/changing table. This is the smallest bedroom in our house so we really needed to make good use of the space. Even if we had the space I don’t think I would see the need for a separate changing table and dresser! I saw the flamingo changing pad cover at Target and just loved it! The curtains are from Target, too. I had a hard time finding curtains that I liked, and then these showed up new at the store one day and they were perfect! The diaper basket organizer is from amazon, and I think it goes well with the sheets we got for the crib!
And that’s the basic overview of her room! I don’t have any pictures of the closet because there’s not much to see there. We use it to store extra diapers and wipes, hang clothes and store some other baby gear. Nothing too exciting! She also has some little built in shelves by the door. We put her books on there, some pictures and some ABC blocks, which are actually the periodic table of elements. We also have a toy box next to the rocking chair, but most of her toys are downstairs right now since that’s where we spend most of our time during the day!
Her room is just the right size for a baby and nice and cozy!
