Dragon Egg bath bombs are fun for the whole family!
It’s a great thing when your interests collide with your kids, isn’t it? Recently my son has been so into dragons and I have been into Game of Thrones, which, of course, has dragons! Of course at age six, he isn’t old enough to watch. But, we can enjoy making dragon themed crafts together. These bath bombs are fun to make together and have a surprise baby dragon inside!
Bath bombs are simple enough to make, yet do require some special skills. Those special skills include patience and the ability to follow directions. This is a great activity to do with your kids, if they posses those special skills. I wouldn’t recommend bath bombs for a kids first recipe, because they can be a little finicky and take awhile before you get the finished product!
Once the dry ingredients are mixed, you have to very slowly add the wet ones. You don’t want to add the wet ingredients too quickly, or the bombs will start fizzing up too soon and they won’t work right in the tub later. To combat this, we use a spray bottle to add the water and food coloring mixture. For this recipe we wanted a bright color, so we used a lot more food coloring mixed in the water than we usually do.
To get the proper consistency you have to spray, spray, spray and mix. You’ll have to do this for awhile, and be sure to mix the whole time so the water drops don’t activate the citric acid to start fizzing! We take turns between spraying and mixing. Keep going until you get the proper consistency, it should be like wet, mold-able sand. Don’t make it too wet or it will take way too long to dry out! It should hold together when you squeeze a handful, as show in the picture above.
After the mixture is ready, add it to your molds. We used large Easter eggs for our dragon egg molds! Add the dragon toys in the middle and press the two sides together. Leave them to dry overnight in a cool, dry place.
Dragon Egg Bath Bombs
Materials
- 3/4 cup + 2 tblsp baking soda
- 1/2 cup citric acid
- 1 cup cornstarch
- green food coloring
- water
- optional: essential oil (4-5 drops)
Tools
- 6 large Easter eggs
- 6 tiny dragons
- spray bottle
Instructions
- In a large bowl mix together the dry ingredients.
- Add a few drops of essential oil* if you want a scent.
- Add the green food coloring to the spray bottle. This is not an exact measurement, but a preference. We used about half of the food coloring bottle, because we wanted the color to be bright.
- Add a little bit of water to the spray bottle, about 1/4 cup. Again, more or less depending on how vibrant you want the color to be.
- Spray the water mixture on the dry mixture, mixing all the time. Spray, spray, spray, mix!
- Continue spraying and mixing until you reach the right consistency. It should be about like wet sand.
- Press the bath bomb mixture into the eggs, leaving room for the dragon toy in the middle! Press the two sides of each egg together and leave them to dry in a cool dry spot, at least overnight.
- Carefully pry open the eggs and gently remove the bath bombs! It may take some coaxing.
Notes
*For the oils we use lavender oil. You can use whatever scent you prefer. You could also use vanilla or peppermint oil that you find on the spice rack, or soap scents.
The eggs must be carefully opened! A few of ours stuck and when I forced them open, they crumbled apart. To combat this you could rub a tiny bit of oil (such as coconut or avocado) on the insides of the plastic eggs.
Don't overfill the eggs, because it may expand a little and then you won't be able to get them out! This can also happen if you store them somewhere with a lot of humidity, so be sure to find a dry place to let them set!
