These vegan jello shots use all vegan friendly ingredients and taste great!
As you may or may not know, Jell-o and other gelatin products are typically made with animal based ingredients. Specifically, animal proteins are used to give gelatin that jiggly consistency. While this is great fun, and fine for most people, it means that if you are vegetarian or vegan you actually can’t have jello! Enter: the Vegan Jello Shot! Whether you’re vegan/vegetarian yourself or you’re planning a party with some vegan guests, you can enjoy jello shots, too!
Vegan jello shots have great jiggle!
How to Make Vegan Jello Shots
To make vegan jello shots I used agar agar powder. Agar powder is a plant based ingredient that can be used as a gelatin substitute. It is derived from sea algae. Agar powder produces a softer gelatin than animal protein based gelatin’s such as Jello or Knox. The jello shots will form quicker, but they also melt very quickly when taken from the fridge so you can’t leave them out too long! Agar is unflavored, so the shots will take on whatever flavor you add. Because of this I do recommend adding a little bit of sugar to your mixture to offset the harsh vodka flavor! Unless you like vodka, then carry on as is!
Note: there are different Agar Agar products available, so make sure you chose the powder form! I’ve linked to the exact one I used in my recipe card below.
These shots took some trial and error to come up with the proper ratio. Following the directions on the label produced shots that were too hard, not at all the consistency you want when doing jello shots! After some tests I came up with what I think is a great ratio with a good “jello” like consistency. It doesn’t take a lot of the powder to make them!
