We could all use a little bit of extra luck sometimes and these Liquid Luck jello shots are just that! These jello shots are another one of my Harry Potter inspired shots! Liquid luck, officially named Felix Felicis in the series, is a potion that makes the drinker lucky in all their endeavors for a certain period of time (until the potion wears off). In the books it’s described as having the appearance of molten gold. It’s also described as ridiculously complicated and time consuming to make, but you’ll find that’s not the case with these shots!
Tips for making Liquid Luck Jello Shots
For the Liquid Luck shots you’ll need of base of a very light to clear juice. I used white grape juice. You could also use white cranberry juice or a lighter apple juice for the same effect. I would highly recommend also using a fruity flavored vodka so you get more flavor, otherwise it will be a bit bland. Although these shots are cute and fun to look at, they don’t pack a punch in the flavor department if you use plain vodka!
Otherwise, they are fairly simple to make! Be sure to let the gelatin bloom for at least a minute before heating up the mixture. To do this, sprinkle the gelatin powder all over the liquid so that all of the powder is touching liquid and takes on a “wet” appearance. This way it can absorb the liquid, which makes the gelatin work. It should have a plump appearance. If you just dump it in and start mixing the gelatin won’t fully dissolve, you’ll get chunks of powder in your shots, and they may not set properly.
One special trick for this shot is to give it an extra stir after about an hour of setting. This is necessary because a lot of the glitter will settle to the bottle after it starts to set. So, after an hour you will pull the shots out of the fridge and stir each one up to distribute the glitter throughout the shot. This will give it a nice sparkle and swirl! Plus, the shot’s will be a little bumpy on top which I think gives it more “molten” appearance, as if they are flowing around like liquid gold.
To achieve the gold appearance I used edible shimmer powder. I used Wilton brand, which seems to be the most easily available, but I’m sure there’s other brands out there. It looks like this: Wilton Pearl Dust Gold (affiliate link). You can also find it at the craft store, such as JoAnn’s or Michael’s, in the baking section. The size is 0.05 ounce or 1.4 grams, and you will use the whole jar for this recipe. (At least I did, you can chose to use less of course!) If you want to be extra you can top the shots with whipped cream and gold sprinkles, too!
