There are several pins on pinterest that show off red, white & blue jello shots, however very few of them include a recipe or how-to, so I thought it would be nice to share how I made my layered jello shots for my 4th of July party! They are fairly easy to make and were a big hit at the party! Pin now and save for next year’s 4th of July!
This is a fun recipe to make year after year for your 4th of July party! Be sure to put your finished shots in a cooler if you’re bringing them to a party so they don’t melt in the sun!
Love those layers!!
Red, White & Blue Jello Shots Recipe First set up your shot cups. I like to spread mine out on baking sheets for easy transport to and from the fridge. I bought 2 oz shot cups from the party store. You do not need to spray with cooking spray or otherwise prepare the cups. As an Amazon Associate and member of other affiliate programs, I earn from qualifying purchases.

A few thoughts on making layered jello shots:
- Be sure to let the layers fully set before you start adding the next one!
Otherwise they will start mixing and you will have pink instead of red
and white! - It is helpful to let the new layer cool a little in
the mixing bowl before you start pouring it in for the same reason as
above. - I recommend leaving your trays in the fridge until you are completely ready to add the next layer.
- I make my shots will half water and half alcohol. So, for a 2 ounce shot
(as pictured above) it is about 1 ounce of alcohol. Some people think
these are “strong,” if you want a weaker shot you can use more cold
water instead of alcohol, as long as it still equals to a cup.
These look great, Rachel. 🙂 Pinning to try next year for sure. Thanks for sharing!
These are adorable! Definitely pinning. I can see why they were such a hit!
Love this idea, these are so cute!
So cute – thanks for sharing!

cute! I tried to make a red white and blue smoothie but the colors just swirled
Thanks for stopping by at the Tasty Tuesday linkup party today!
Pinning the shots 🙂
I'm hopping over from the Tasty Tuesday link up. These are adorable! I've never tried layered jello shots but they certainly look festive.
Definitely going to try this year!!
What jello flavors (red and blue) are you using?
Hi Stephanie- I used blue raspberry and for the red I used cherry.
Thanks! Also, how long would you say the whole process of making these are?
Can you use sweeten condensed milk instead of coconut milk?
I’m not sure, but I think it would be too thick and change the consistency of the shot to be very “chewy!” I picked coconut milk because the flavor is so neutral and goes well with the other fruit and vodka flavors. If you are against coconut milk maybe try some light cream? Let me know what you decide!
Is the coconut milk canned or the kind in fridge?
It’s the canned one
I thought these looked great for a Memorial Day party! I reduced the vodka to 1/2 cup in the jello parts and just replaced that missing 1/2 cup with water. The white layer I think next time I will just leave the vodka out altogether, and let it be a sweet section in the middle without alcohol. These turned out great and I know they will be a hit at the party!! The alcohol amounts are adjustable to your taste, so you just have to make them and try to see if you like them as is or a little weaker. Start these 2 days before your event so you aren’t rushing with the chilling and making the layers!
Hi! Do you need to add sugar to the white layer or can it be left out? Thanks!
You can leave the sugar out, but that layer will be a little bland tasting.
I made these last year for our 4th of July party! they were a HUGE hit! Maybe a bit too toxic! I am in the process of making them again for this 4th of July beach trip…
Awesome! Glad you liked them!
How many does this make?
It makes approx 24 shots (2 ounces each)
It makes 24?? The post says Yields Approx. 45…I’m making these now and was wondering why my layers were looking a little thin…
Yeah it seems the recipe plug in pulled the data weird and made up the yield? It’s deff closer to 24!! I’d say 24-28 depending on your layers. I made a half batch this year and it came out to 14 shots. I’ll have to fix the yield number in the recipe card, thanks for pointing that out!
Is it two envelops of Knox 1oz box for the white layer?
Yummy! At first I thought you meant a kids recipe but now I see they have alcohol in them! The look like a lot of fun to make.
Definitely not for kids! 😉 although you can replace the alcohol with water and it would be kid friendly.
A nice idea for a St Patrick’s Day party too – in green, white and orange.
Never made or even tasted a jello shot in my life 🙊🙈🙊🙈 i should try, these look fun!!
Love this idea! Did you use coconut milk out of a can or from the fridge section (by dairy milk)?
I used the canned kind!
Hi-so if you let each layer sit overnight, it takes three nights to make? I want to make these for the Fourth, just want to make sure I have allow myself enough time. I want the layer effect which is the whole point!
You don’t have to wait overnight for each one but I would let it set for at least 4-6 hours. Just check after 4 hours to make sure it’s really set (not sticky) before doing the next one!
Do you cober them with a lid over night?
Do you cover these over night with each layer?
You can! I usually only cover it at the end. You could cover with a sheet of wax paper so you don’t have to do each one individually each night. You also don’t HAVE to leave it overnight. Four to five hours should be fine!
Okay did I miss something? The white layer instructions did not yield optimal results. I had to boil the water and gelatin, then add the coconut milk. Following it step by step made the gelatin curdle (?!)
I’m really not sure. Did you let the gelatin bloom? You have to let it sit for a minute or two before you cook it. Did you use canned coconut milk or fresh from the refrigerator section? Maybe that makes a difference. Plain gelatin does sometimes leave chunks behind but you can pour it through a strainer to remove them and it should still set to jelly. Did you boil the water and coconut together? That’s what I do.
Just made them for our All American Alcohol party tonight, they were so easy! I used the leftovers without alcohol for my kiddos of the coconut!! Thanks for the recipe. I look forward to tasting them tonight!!
Do you add Knox to all layers or just the white layer?
Just the white layer. The other layers are regular jello
So the white layer has 3 cups of liquid? Does that make it a thicker layer?
HI Belinda! Yes 3 cups total with the alcohol! The consistency is a little thicker than the other layers but you don’t really notice when you do the shots. If you meant volume, you can control how much you put in each shot. I like to make them as even as possible so there may be a little bit of the white left over.
Thanks!
Is this two envelopes of the Knox 1 ounce package?
Yes, I didn’t realize there was more than one size!
Thanks! Starting these tonight:)
Does the white coconut layer take longer to set? I’ve had it in the fridge for about 4 hours and it’s still a slightly thickened liquid. Did I do something wrong? And if so, can I just pour it off and keep the red layer? Or would I need to completely start over?
It should take 4-6 hours to set the white layer, following the package directions. If it’s still liquid now you may not have let all the gelatin dissolve. I’ve never had to pour it off and start over but if it’s cold you probably can since the Red layer should be set still.
Awesome. Good thing I always keep canned coconut milk in the house. Starting the white layer again. Thanks!!
Making these right now!
Made these for the 4th and I warned everyone they would consider these strong (what I consider perfect ratio) I went for the original “Bomb Pop” flavors, I used cherry, “Berry Blue” (closest flavor to blue raspberry,) and on the white layer I used 3/4 coconut milk instead of 1 cup and threw in 1/4 cup lime juice. They came out super cute (except for the ones that weren’t sitting level on the pan, oops!) These were a big hit this year, everyone was impressed, and possibly drunk! I will definitely make these again! Thanks for sharing! Red, white, blue, and Vodka too!!!
Hello, I just made the blue and white jello shots in separate cups. (for Penn State tailgate this weekend) When I made the white, after chilling, it separated, looking like two layers instead of just all white. Would you know why this happened? I used Blue Chair Bay Coconut Rum (which is clear), and followed your directions when heating water, coconut milk and gelatin. Thank you.
Oh weird! I’m not sure except maybe you heated it for too long and the milk started to curdle? Honestly, I would do just the coconut milk as it’s own shot because it doesn’t have a lot of flavor! What kind of coconut milk did you use?
For 3oz of jello, do you use 1 cup of vodka and 1 cup of water. Or 1/2 cup of vodka and 1/2 cup of water?
For a 3oz box of jello I use 1 cup of water and 1 cup of vodka.
I made these for my party this Saturday. Of course I had to try one, with whip cream of course. They are absolutely amazing. And I did use the coconut milk, so glad I did. They turned out beautifully. Thanks for the recipe!
Thanks! So glad you liked it!!
Do NOT use this recipe! The white is entirely too watery!!! After 6 HOURS in the fridge….a completely spoiled batch! The Whitt’s does NOT set with this recipe!!!!
Hi Janet! I’m sorry these didn’t work for you. I make them every year to test them and they work 100% of the time. The main reason the white layer wouldn’t set would be if you didn’t let the gelatin bloom before you heated it up and mixed it in. Hope that helps!
I haven’t finished making mine yet, but it think part of the problem with coconut milk layer is that people are using different brands. Depending on the quality of the canned coconut milk it will probably turn out thicker or more watery. When I spend $4 at wholefoods it is MUCH thicker than the $.99 kind in the Thai section at the normal grocery store.
Rachel, is there a certain brand/consistency you recommend?
Thanks!
I’ve used different kinds and they’ve all worked! I just grab what’s at the store. I think the brand I used this year had the best flavor though! It was Hokan brand which I picked up at Publix in the “international” section.
If I double the recipe do I also double the coconut milk? So 2 cups? Thanks.
Yes I would double everything. If you don’t have two cans just make it as is and the white layer will just be a little smaller than the others!
These turned out great! So I wasn’t sure which kind of coconut milk to buy and I used sweetened condensed coconut milk which wasn’t white enough to make the middle layer so I mixed in some French vanilla coffee creamer and skipped adding the sugar and they taste absolutely fantastic! Thank you so much for the recipe!
These came out terrible! I’m going to have to try them. I’ve made the regular jello shots, but nothing fancy like these. We are going out of state to visit relatives for Christmas and I plan on making and taking these jello shots. So I will be making them soon. Can’t wait to taste them. Thanks for sharing your recipe.
