Welcome to the fifth week of my Color Week series! We are learning one color per week by incorporating different activities focusing on one color at a time. So far we have covered the primary colors and orange. I’ve taken a few weeks off posting about these activities, but we haven’t stopped learning our colors!
Welcome to Purple Week!
One activity we did that I didn’t take photos of was a purple bath time. Carter played in purple water and tried out the purple bath bombs I made for Easter! He loves those bath bombs and request them now for every bath time!
First up for Purple Week was our “magic rocks” activity! I created these rocks using baking soda and water with a few drops of food coloring. After they dried I wished I had used more food coloring because they weren’t as bright purple as I wished. In a few of the rocks I hid little toys to be discovered!
I showed Carter how to dissolve the rocks in the “magic liquid” which was so much fun! As you can see, he also experimented on breaking them apart with his hands as well.
We also read the book “Harold and the Purple Crayon” several times throughout the week (and after) and then I set up a large sheet of paper for Carter to draw on with purple crayons!
I drew the building and encouraged him to draw windows, just like Harold, but he was only interested in drawing trucks!
Later we tried a new painting activity we haven’t done before- milk painting! You mix a little food coloring with milk and use it to paint on bread! The colors come out super vivid and really sink into the bread.

Milk painting was really interesting and something we will definitely be trying again with other colors!
Last we did a little science experiment with oil and colored water to see how they would mix together. Carter enjoyed using the medicine dropper and swirling the oil around, but this activity didn’t hold as much interest for him as the others. Also, you have to be very careful because the combination of water, oil and food coloring was super messy and stained his skin pretty bad!
