These Sorting Hat Shots are the perfect way to celebrate your love for all things Harry Potter! Harry’s birthday is coming soon so make some shots to add to your party! These shots are made with a surprise inside! Each one has a different color so help your party goers get sorted into their Hogwarts houses.
As you can see, the color inside the shots isn’t totally hidden by the white. One of the reasons I did it this way is to show off the colors for each house. You might also have party goers who are very picky about which house they get! This way they can check if they want, instead of being surprised.
If you want it to be a random surprise you can make the colored part on the inside smaller using a smaller gummy mold than I did. You could also decide to use opaque shot cups instead of the regular clear ones, then no one would be able to see the inside to cheat! These silver mini party cups would be perfect for those shots! This is what the sorting hat shots look like when you cut them open. As you can see, the shots are made in several layers, so make sure you give yourself plenty of time to make each layer. For the white layers I’ve gone the “easy” route and used Gel-shotz pina colada gelatin. (affiliate link). You can get it on amazon and some grocery stores have also recently started selling it!
How to make Sorting Hat Jello Shots

Sorting Hat Jello Shots
These jello shots are perfect for your Harry Potter themed party!
Ingredients
- 2 boxes gel-shotz pina colada gelatin (3oz boxes)
- 1 box jello of each color: red, blue, green, yellow (3oz boxes)
- 4 packets of knox gelatin
- 4 cups of vodka, divided
- 2 cups of water, divided
Special Equipment
- 2 ounce Jello shot cups (24-26)
- 4 small candy molds
Optional Toppings
- Whipped cream
- Sprinkles
Instructions
For the first layer:
- Mix one cup of boiling water with one box of the white gelatin, stirring until fully dissolved.
- Add one cup of vodka and stir.
- Divide mixture into jello shot ups, filling each one only halfway.
- Transfer to fridge to set, at least three hours.
For the colors:
- In a small saucepan mix one box of jello with one packet of knox gelatin. Add ½ cup of vodka and stir.
- Heat over medium heat, stirring all the time, until gelatin and jello are fully dissolved and mixture it hot but not boiling. Mixture will be slightly thick. Do not bring to boil as it will cook a lot of the alcohol out.
- Transfer mixture into candy mold of choice (I used squares, but you could use gummy bears or other shapes, whatever you have!)
- Set in fridge so the gummies can firm up (about 2-3 hours)
- Repeat for each color so you have 4 trays of gummies, one for each color!
For the Top Layer:
- After the gummies and bottom layer have set: Remove gummies from molds. Divide the gummies between each shot pressing them down into the bottom layer a little so they stick in, one gummy per shot. (You may have leftover gummies to enjoy)
- Prepare the top layer with the white gelatin using the same directions as the bottom layer. (one cup boiling water and one cup vodka)
- Divide the mixture between shot cups, filling to the top and covering the gummies!
- Transfer to fridge to set, at least 4 hours.
- Top with whipped cream and sprinkles just before serving. Enjoy!
Notes
- I use whipped cream or vanilla flavored vodka in my jello shots, which gives it a little sweetness.
- These shots are not fully opaque, if you want them to be a full surprise try using shot cups that are not see through such as these mini-party cups (affiliate link)
