How to make Hocus Pocus Spell Book Shots
There are several different ways you can make these shots. I’ll explain what I did and then give some ideas for alternate ways you could make them. You’ll definitely need some black food coloring and a small, very clean, paint brush to draw the design on.
•For the color: I used lemon jello for these shots. This is a good base because it mixes well with the soda to make the brown color.
•For the alcohol: This is where you could change it up a little. I used rum for these shots for a rum and coke shot. Another choice would be to go with a long island ice tea shot, which gives the same color and has a delicious flavor. They are just as easy to make, and taste so good!
•Decoration: To create the spine of the book and the stitch lines I use black food coloring with a few drops of vodka. I find adding the vodka makes it a little more watery to help me paint the design better, especially if using gel food coloring. Draw the lines on however you want, I used a picture of the book from the movie as a guide. If you want to get really detailed you could even add the little stitch marks!
Tips for making rectangular shaped jello shots
To make these shots I used an 8×8 glass brownie pan. You should very lightly coat the pan with cooking spray of your choice. What I do is spray the pan and then wipe it with a paper towel so there isn’t any residue. This will leave just enough spray to help the gelatin not stick, but won’t leave a film on the shots.
Be sure to cut all the way around the pan to loosen the gelatin, then cut the rectangles. When you cut them you have to remember the pancake method- the first one might be a flop! But that’s okay! The first one is hard to get out, but after that it’s smooth sailing! I use a small serving spatula to get them out, like this one (affiliate link)
