Back in my day we had to walk to school, uphill both ways! In a hurricane! Remember your grandpa saying that? Anyway, Steph over at Life According to Steph is cohosting a “back in my day” link up this week and I am jumping on the bandwagon!
Back in my day…
We didn’t use the internet for research. We went to the library to look stuff up for our school assignments! Pretty sure this is a lost art on today’s youth.
We used the typewriter to write our essays in middle school. If you messed up you had to white it out and retype it!
When we got a computer in our house it was a big deal to be allowed to go online! We went in AOL chat rooms and met people using a/s/l.
No one had cells phones in high school except our parents (and the rich kids). I was allowed to take my moms cell phone with me when I drove her car to go out with friends or pick my sister up somewhere- for emergencies only! I didn’t get my own cell phone until college.
Facebook wasn’t invented until after I graduated college.
I thought this fanny pack was super cool. It had a spot just the right size for my pink camera. Which, by the way, had film in it! A big problem was when you would wind the film so it would be ready for the next picture and it would accidentally take a picture in your bag!
We wore puffy painted teeshirts like we just didn’t care!
We wore keds, and scrunchies and jelly shoes, too! Jelly shoes were da bomb.
We used the word “like” like every other word.
Everyone said “whatever,” like, a lot, too.
No one had store bought Halloween costumes, our moms made our costumes for us! After trick-or-treating our parents would check all our candy
We rode our bikes around without our parents and played in the park across the street all afternoon!
In high school people wore overalls (guilty!), shell necklaces and baby doll tees (which I hated)!
We watched TGIF and Dawson’s Creek. 7th Heaven and Gilmore Girls were our “watch with mom” shows. We were not allowed to watch The Simpsons!
We got free pizza at Pizza Hut for reading books! Also, “Take a look, its in a book, reading rainbooooow!!!”
This month’s super sponsor:
I love this list, and that first photo of you! I was the same way with The Simpsons and LOVED TGIF and 7th Heaven!! haha
This is great! What were the shows on TGIF? I remember the Thursday night lineup on NBC, but for some reason, TGIF is blank. Great pictures too. ๐
These are good Rachel, and yes I really enjoyed Steph's post yesterday, very fun and reflective. I love the Gilmore Girls and have missed it since my daughter left for college four years ago but we still watch it on occasion when she comes home. I do admit- there were never, ever- homemade Halloween costumes in my home though uniforms and pajama outfits from Hong Kong were once worn. Riding bikes and playing in the park, the joys of childhood! Thanks for sharing.
We had the same life! I even wrote a little about jellies in my post. Haha! I loved Book It! Ah, the good old days.
Ahh, I was laughing and nodding at all of those. Especially Dawson's Creek because I got the complete series as a Christmas present last year!
I see Carter so much in that first pic of you! It's funny that you weren't allowed to watch The Simpsons…that was a Sunday night staple in my household! haha
Ahh the shell necklaces! And I forgot about puffy painted tees ๐
My 5th birthday party was set up so we could all puffy pain our own t-shirt. Those were the days!! Thanks for linking up!
Found you from the link-up ๐
TGIF! Yes!! The best television all week! My husband and I were just talking about our favorite TGIF shows just last week. We couldn't remember some of them, so we had to Google them. (Go figure.) I could still probably sing all the words to the Step-by-Step theme song.
I gather that overalls are coming back in (I am too old to be up on this shit) since I saw 10 different teenagers wearing overall shorts recently. I am not sure that is a trend that needs to be revisited…
Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
Oh my gosh I'm dyyying over the fanny pack! How freakin' cute is that?!?! ๐ I too remember when cameras went off in them and you developed a black photo. haha
Aw I wish Pizza Hut still did the reading program. And I could never get those jelly shoes to be comfortable, always tore my feet up ๐
Oh yeah. We must be about the same age because all of these sound very familiar.
Fanny packs- God, I love it! Thanks for the trip down memory lane. ๐
I love this! I was all about Baby Doll tee's and Dawson's Creek!
These are awesome. It made me laugh and even tear up a little…time sure has flown since the 80's/90's. Did you ever have ribbon barrettes or those safety pins with beads that were on shoe laces?
