Let’s talk photography! Taking decent photos is a skill all bloggers should have, and one I am constantly working on. You don’t have to be professional to take decent photos, you just need to practice! Don’t tell anyone, but I do not have a fancy pants camera with special lenses that automatically make my photos look good! I am constantly trying different angles and methods and usually take a ton of photos just to get that one “good” shot! I know I am not alone in this, photography can be tricky and I know I don’t always get that perfect photo! But, it is important to have nice photos in your blog posts that are not blurry!
One trick I’ve been working on lately is trying to find the perfect setting for my photos, especially my food and drink images. I’ve noticed that having the right background and styling the setting just right can really make or break a photo! (not to mention lighting, but I’m not even going to get into that right now) I’ve been experimenting with different ways to style my food photos and I’m still figuring it out and learning new tricks.
Something I am starting to love is the super easy DIY photo booth! It so easy to make and only requires you to buy one cheap item! Can you guess? It’s a poster board! Here’s how I did it (prepare to be amazed…).
So here are three examples of strawberry pictures I took on the back table in my house. In the first one you can see the ugly old window in the background- that just won’t do! Then, I held up the poster board behind the table to cover the window and already it looks better! This photo could actually start to be come acceptable, especially with some extra styling! Then, I created the “photo booth” for the third photo! Having the white all around the bowl you are photographing just really helps put the fruit into focus. It also gives me a great white space to write the title of my recipe or other eye catching phrase!
One thing to note here is about the lighting. In the first two photos the sun was shining and the natural light was a lot better. Then, in the third photo the sun went behind a cloud and you can tell it’s just not as good. So, the photo booth gives a great effect to my photo, but lighting is important, too!
Here is how it looks from far away. To make the background just carefully fold the poster board in half. Don’t create a crease, because then you will have a line in your photo, just create a gentle fold that kind of slopes and lean it up against a hard surface.
Here is another photo I took using the “photo booth” method and a little editing in PicMonkey! Again, the lighting could be better (it was cloudy) but overall I think the picture looks really nice because of the white background! What are some of your photography techniques?
