This week for Mini Chef Mondays we did something a little different.  We made a teddy bear picnic!  I decided to do the picnic to go along with the fun book giveaway we are doing this week for the new book Mother Bruce.  Mother Bruce is a a bear who loves nothing more to eat than eggs!

To start our picnic we made teddy bear toast!  We spread peanut butter over the toast and arranged banana slices and raisins to make the face.  Carter absolutely loved his teddy bear toast and kept asking for more!

But, the real star of our picnic was our (attempted) teddy bear deviled eggs!  We made deviled eggs and used slices of black olives to make the faces.  You could use other things to make faces too such as capers, cut up veggies or green olives!

Teddy Bear Deviled Eggs;

You will need:

  • Eggs
  • mayo
  • mustard
  • salt and pepper
  • paprika
  • olives (or other cut up foods for the faces)
What to do:
1. Parents job- boil the eggs to make hard boiled eggs.  Cool in the fridge.  Peel and slice in half lengthwise.  Remove the yolks and add them all to a bowl.
2. Kids job- smash up the yolks with a fork.  Add mayo, mustard and spices to taste.  We made 4 eggs (so 8 halves) and used about 2 tablespoons mayo and about 1 1/2 teaspoons mustard.
3. Mix well then carefully return the mixture to the egg whites to fill the holes back in.
4. Decorate with the olives to make the teddy bear “faces”!
Don’t forget to serve gummy bears for dessert at your teddy bear picnic!

At your picnic you can also read the new Mother Bruce book with your kids!  Bruce is a bear who loves eggs. One day he finds that his eggs have hatched into goslings!

Bruce’s goslings think he is their mother and Bruce learns some fun lessons about being a “mom” along the way!  Click here to learn more about the book!
