The Ivory Soap Experiment!

I have been wanting to try out this Ivory soap activity for awhile now and finally got around to it!  Basically, you place a bar of Ivory soap on a paper plate and pop it in the microwave* for about a minute or two and it turns into soap fluff!  Or as some may call it, a soap cloud.  See for yourself!

It almost looks like marshmallow fluff!  It’s brittle on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside.

Carter knows this is one of his activity bins and he is ready to check out what this activity has in store!
 
First I let him touch the soap and see what it was all about.  This was a fun sensory experiment!
 

After he was done with that part, I gave him a squirt bottle with water and food coloring so we could see what happened when water was added to it.  I did orange for fall and when that one was done he wanted more so I made red for the second bottle.  Carter really loved this part and wanted to keep doing it, even after all the water and soap had mixed together!

Nothing much happened at first except that the colored water just colored the soap cloud!  Eventually, as more water was added, the soap began to melt down and by the end we had soap soup.

Here is what it looks like up close!  You can see the fluffy edges where the water hadn’t hit yet

 
Pro tip: don’t cook it too long or it will get all over your microwave and trust me, it takes forever to clean off!  Weeks later and my microwave still smells a little like soap.  I did it for the full two minutes, which was clearly about 30 seconds too long!

*By the way- I do not recommend trying this with other kinds of soap bars.  These experiments are only good for Ivory soap.  Please do not put other kinds of soap in your microwave!
