Today we continue our Dino Week with a super fun and easy to make activity: a homemade dinosaur dig! You can create this DIY dino dig with items you most likely have around the house already and just a small amount to prepare ahead of time.
Materials needed:
- a shallow box, such as half of a cereal box or the lid to a shoe box
- Q-tips
- glue
- sand
- Optional: print out a dinosaur shape or skeleton and cut it out
First I glued down the dinosaur skeleton I had printed and cut out. You can make your fossils free hand as well, but I wanted to have a skeleton in place as a guide! Glue down the Q tips to make the fossil in the shape of your dinosaur, cutting them up as needed! You can make this as simple or complex as you’d like. For older kids, you can have them do this step with you as well!
Allow the glue to fully dry (I did overnight) and then spread sand out in a thin layer to cover the “fossils” fully. Add some “paleontologist” brushes and then let your little paleontologist get to work uncovering the fossils!
We did this inside, as it was raining a lot last week, but I would recommend this as an outside activity! My son really enjoyed this activity, and the great part is that you can use it over and over again! He also enjoyed finding other small toys to cover with sand and “find” along with the fossils!
